Destination Bordeaux
A warm welcome awaits you in Bordeaux
Steeped in history
With its elegant waterfront façades, the colonnaded Grand Théâtre, the vast Place des Quinconces and the 18th-century district designed by the royal intendant Tourny, Bordeaux’s rich heritage is intimately bound up with the wine trade and the port which in its heyday was on all the world’s main shipping routes.
A vibrant and colourful city
Bordeaux is a vibrant, colourful southern European city, the artistic, intellectual and commercial heart of one of France’s largest administrative regions.
A passion for the arts
Bordeaux offers a lively, year-round arts programme ranging from music, dance and theatre performances to exhibitions of painting and sculpture both traditional and contemporary, at venues including the prestigious Grand Théâtre, modern Hangar 14 and the Museum of Contemporary Art (CAPC) as well as numerous other venues in and around the city.
Foodie paradise
With some fifteen gourmet restaurants, a host of bistros and brasseries offering local and regional fare and celebrated chefs such as Jean-Marie Amat, Francis Garcia and Jean-Pierre Xiradakis cooking up a storm on both sides of the Garonne river, Bordeaux invites you to savour all the delights of a great gastronomic capital!
The home of wine
The vineyards of the world’s biggest fine wine producing region begin literally just outside the city. The happy combination of soil, climate and human know-how results in a symphony of colours, aromas and flavours. These are the great Bordeaux appellations, from the golden sweetness of Sauternes and the rich ruby glow of the great Saint-Émilions to the sophistication of the Médocs and Graves and the generosity of the Côtes.
The power of the ocean…
Less than an hour from the city, the vast beaches of the Atlantic coast and the Bassin d’Arcachon offer all the pleasures of the sea against a stunning backdrop of sand dunes, pine forests and lakes.
… and the river flowing through.
The mighty Garonne has always been fundamental to the history and prosperity of Bordeaux. Since the recent waterfront redevelopment, Bordeaux’s mighty river has come to symbolise a new-found balance and is now the focal point of the city’s leisure and entertainment facilities.
